Something about Who We Are

We share three children, southern roots, and a common interest in politics. Not the horse-race-stuff, but the more important part: the issues. We come from the restorationist religious tradition. She was raised in the Church of Christ and he came to that tradition at 18. We met at Harding University, in Searcy, Arkansas and moved to the DC metro area for law school. We love our alma mater. All the posts about her can be found here.

We had written here as “extremist” and “mrs.extremist” for a while but have now dropped those monikers in favor of simple, informal first name references. Below is the explanation I had posted about the name, but precious few people seemed to read or appreciate it:

My nom de plume is a joke — a little tweak to those who like to characterize anyone right-of-center as “out of the mainstream.” It’s my pathetic little attempt to disarm the epithet by embracing it. Despite my efforts to explain my moniker, some folks still take offense. One person who contacted me privately about it said:

I do think the extremist label puts off a lot of people from the outset. I think a lot of folk think of people who fly planes into buildings, blow up federal buildings and bomb black churches when they hear that word. I know you don’t want to convey that so I am mystified why that is your badge.

My reply was this:

I chose the pseudonym in the spirit in which it is increasingly used to describe some of the most thoughtful, measured, and respected people in America — if they happen to be right of the political center in any meaningful sense (see, this example). If “extremist” means “people who want to fly planes into buildings, blow up federal buildings, and bomb black churches,” then I suggest you contact Lisa Bennett at the National Organization for Women (202-628-8669, ext. 123; cell 202-641-1906) and ask her why she chose to apply that label the now-Chief Justice of the United States. In other words, if John Roberts is an extremist, then so am I.

  • It’s a Wonderful Life– “Just remember this, Mr. Potter: that this rabble you’re talking about, they do most of the working and paying and living and dying in this community. Well, is it too much to have them work and pay and live and die in a couple of decent rooms and a bath?”

  • Mr. Smith Goes to Washington– “Get up there with that lady that’s up on top of this Capitol dome, that lady that stands for liberty. Take a look at this country through her eyes if you really want to see something. And you won’t just see scenery; you’ll see the whole parade of what Man’s carved out for himself, after centuries of fighting. Fighting for something better than just jungle law, fighting so’s he can stand on his own two feet, free and decent, like he was created, no matter what his race, color, or creed. That’s what you’d see. There’s no place out there for graft, or greed, or lies, or compromise with human liberties.”

  • Braveheart– “There’s a difference between us. You think the people of this land exist to provide you with position. I think your position exists to provide those people with freedom. And I go to make sure that they have it. “

  • Forrest Gump– “I’m not a smart man, but I know what love is.”

  • The Count of Monte Cristo– Abbe Faria: “Here is your final lesson. Do not commit the crime for which you now serve the sentence. God said, ‘Vengeance is mine.’” Edmond Dantes: “I don’t believe in God.” Abbe Faria: “It doesn’t matter. He believes in you.”

  • Moll Flanders– “Circumstances have taught me that a man’s ethics are the only possessions he will take beyond the grave.”

  • Far and Away– “I tried to prove myself to you, But I know nothing of Books, or Alphabets, or Sun, or Moon, or… All I know is Joseph Loves Shannon.”

  • Stand By Me– Gordie: “No man, seriously. Am I weird?” Chris: “Yeah, but so what? Everybody’s weird.”

  • October Sky — “Dad, I may not be the best, but I come to believe that I got it in me to be somebody in this world. And it’s not because I’m so different from you either, it’s because I’m the same. I mean, I can be just as hard-headed, and just as tough. I only hope I can be as good a man as you. Sure, Warner Von Braun is a great scientist… but he isn’t my hero. “

  • The Shawshank Redemption– “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”
