Pete’s Pond

My latest vice is checking Pete’s Pond, a live wildlife cam in Botswana, throughout the day to see if I can spot any wildlife.

“That doesn’t sound so bad.” you say. But it is. You see, I can’t look away. I can’t drag myself away from the computer because there’s the chance that if I do, I’ll miss a herd of elephants or giraffes stopping by for a drink.

I am awed by God’s creation and grateful for the technology that allows me to view warthogs and ostriches in their natural habitat in Africa from the comfort of my own home.

Peak viewing hours are 4pm - 8pm EST and 12am - 4am EST.

If you don’t see anything interesting at first, come back later. Or, if you have a fast internet connection, leave it open while you work in another window & you might hear spashing or other sounds after a while to alert you to animal activity.

You might also want to check out the National Zoo’s various web cams. Here you can watch elephants, pandas and various other animals including my children’s favorite, the naked mole-rats. They think the name is just as entertaining as the animal. Go figure.

*Edited to add: The camera does pan from time to time. And I think perhaps a real person adjusts it sometimes to focus on animals. Just because you don’t see anything at first doesn’t mean there’s nothing to see. The camera will move in a minute.
