Steve Irwin, RIP

We awoke this morning to the news that Steve Irwin, founder of Australia Zoo and television personality, has died. Our son has been a huge fan of the “Crocodile Hunter” for several years and one day hopes to go to Australia and to Australia Zoo.

What can you say about this exuberant man? He makes me think of American folk heroes like Pecos Bill and the legends surrounding Davey Crockett and other frontiersmen and cowboys who fearlessly faced danger.

Although it is no surprise that Irwin lost his life to a wild animal, WTOP radio reported that death by stingray is extremely rare. There are actually only three documented deaths in the last hundred years.

That is so sad! I read the account of his accident and it sure sounds like it was initially far less dangerous than many of the other animal adventures he shared with his audience. It serves as a tragic reminder that wild animals, whether on land, in the sea or in the air, are just that: wild, and unpredictable. Fortunately millions of people have been able to see those animals up close and personal through Steve Irwin’s shows, and, by doing, develop a sense of awe about this wonderful world God created for us.

My three sons have been raised on Irwin and his antics, and we’re all a little sad around our house this morning.

He obviously had a high regard for the creation and passed that love on to a generation of children who will always remember his signature yell, “Crikey!”

He’ll be missed, but remembered fondly.
